GYS Pixels

GYS Pixels is a free pixel-based type family in 27 styles, built around a simple idea: what happens when a well-structured typographic system is injected with something that does not quite belong? In this case, the cause of this visual interruption is a disproportionate pixel element. Across the family, it grows, shifts, and gradually takes over the letterforms. Each of the 27 styles captures a different stage of that process, from a barely visible sliver to an all-encompassing blob. Along the way, familiar letters begin to stretch beyond their expected proportions, creating shapes that sit somewhere between recognizable and ambiguous. As the pixel changes, the forms become increasingly distorted, stretched, and compressed around it. Familiar proportions start to disappear, counters change shape, and individual characters become more ambiguous.

The project first took shape as a physical, grid-based experiment: a 3D-printed board with a set of matching pins. It did not stay physical for long. The system quickly outgrew its original format and developed into a digital type family, where the idea could be pushed much further. GYS Pixels works as a collection of 27 individual styles and as a variable font with Weight and Width axes. The family includes extensive Latin and Cyrillic language support, alongside a broad set of OpenType features including case-sensitive punctuation, stylistic alternates, fractions, and more.

Designed primarily for display use, GYS Pixels works best when it has room to show its character: posters, titles, headlines, brand identities, and other large-scale typography. It is also the first free font family released by Groteskly Yours Studio. We see it as an introduction to the wider GYS collection (both visually and technically) and a small overview of the kind of systems, details, and experiments that run through our other releases.
